East Bengal lift FFederation Cup via tie breaker, Shillong Lajong FC 2nd Top
GUWAHATI, Jan 3: East Bengal lifted the 31st Federation Cup Soccer Tournament defeating a spirited and depleted Shillong Lajong FC by 3-0 via tie breaker at the Nehru Stadium here today. The scheduled and extra time of the game was ended as goalless draw. Yusif Yakubu, Nirmal Chettri, and Sanju Pradhan scored in the shoot-out to give East Bengal their 6th title. Lajong failed to convert any of their three penalties, thanks to fantastic performance of the goalkeeper of East Bengal Abhra Mondal who saved all three shots of Lajong to leave the Lajong fans disappointed. Shillong Lajong, who were forced to start without Daniel Bedemi and James Giblee due to suspensions, brought in Zohmingliana and Roland in place of them, while East Bengal had to make one change, bringing back Harmanjot Khabra in place of the injured Alvito D'Cunha. The final match of the tournament saw huge turn out and according to the official information more than 20,000 spectators were in the gallery when the game was going on. The atmosphere in front of the RG Baruah Sports Complex today could compare with an ODI match as people, most of Shillong Lajong FC supporters, had to wait for a long time in the queue to enter inside the stadium. The match started with both sides trying to figure each other out, but East Bengal looked a little bit composed in the later part of the match. Yakubu, East Bengal striker, was the live wire in the game and alone created many opportunities for his side capitalizing the physical advantage. The defence of Lajong was very cool in the game and repaired the damage, occurred due to absence of Bedemi, nicely. Same could be told on the Kolkata's outfit also whose defence was rock solid today and Abhra Mondal didn't have to do much work below the bar during the scheduled and extra time. East Bengal came close to score twice in the first half and in both the occasions it was Harmanjot Khabra who wasted the opportunities. The Lajong strikers Tuboi and Gurnung, who were instrumental on the team's win in the other matches, were however didn't get too much opportunities in the game as their midfield wasn't up to the mark today. Bhaichung Bhutia, who took the ground as a substitute in the second half, didn't get chance to do too much in the match as Lajong never provided free spaces in the game. Meanwhile, there was absolutely no doubt in anybody's mind who would be the real heroes in today's match and they were the two goalkeepers of either side Gumpe Rime and Abhra Mondal. Gumpe Rime, who was under the bar of Shillong Lajong goal, was superb and it was only because of his fantastic performance that saved Lajong to concede a goal in the schedule as well as extra time. On the other hand, East Bengal goalkeeper Abhra Mondal did the tricks for his team in the penalty shoot out saving all three shots taken by Lajong FC. The first half of extra time saw Lajong in a more comfortable zone but in the second half of the extra time it was East Bengal who looked more dangerous than their opponent. In the shoot-out Yusif Yakubu calmly slotting home, but Anil Gurung had his spot kick saved by Abhra Mondal to give the Kolkatans the advantage. Gumpe Rime almost saved the second shot of East Bengal taken by Nirmal Chettri but the ball went into the net ricocheting his hand. Samson took the second shot of Shillong Lajong but that too was saved wonderfully by Abhra Mondal which means East Bengal took a 2-0 lead. If Harmanjot Khabra converted his shot than it could have settled the match in favour of East Bengal as Kryshan Lyngshing's weak penalty was later saved easily by Abhra Mondal. But surprisingly Khabra's shot went outside the ground hitting the bar.  Sanju Pradhan then stepped up to score the winning goal and it also helped East Bengal to end the drought of title which lasted almost for two years. The Federation Cup title also helped East Bengal to qualify for the AFC Cup. The Assam Governor JB Patnaik and Meghalaya Chief Minister DD Lapang along with several Assam Ministers were present in the ground to witness the final. Though Shillong Lajong today lost the final but star striker of East Bengal Bhaichung Bhutia praised their performance. Talking to the media just after the final Bhaichung said, "They played really well and it was because of their good performance that we couldn't settle the game in favour of us in the scheduled time." On the other hand, the coach of Shillong Lajong FC Stanley Rozario said, he is satisfied with his boys' performance in the final and the coach also felt that the good performance in the tournament would help his side to play with more confidence in the I League matches. East Bengal received Rs 12 lakh for winning the Federation Cup title while Shillong Lajong FC were richer by Rs 7 lakh. THE SENTINEL

[ഉള്ള ഇത്തിരി ആണത്തമാകട്ടെ ചീത്ത Cholesterol ന്റെ കാര്യം പറഞ്ഞ പോലാ - "സ്ത്രീകളുമായി ബന്ധം സാധ്യമല്ല, ബന്ധപ്പെടലേ സാധ്യമുള്ളൂ" എന്നൊക്കെ എഴുതിപ്പോവുന്ന തരം ചീപ്പ് ആണത്തം. മുഖമടച്ച് ഒന്ന് കിട്ടിയാല്‍ പുഴുക്കുത്തി അടച്ച രണ്ട് അണപ്പല്ലുകോളോടൊപ്പം കൊഴിഞ്ഞുപോകാവുന്നതേയുള്ളു അതും]. ഇനി ഒരു ക്രിക്കറ്റ്ഭ്രാന്തനാണ് എന്ന സത്യം തുറന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാലോ, ആളുകള്‍ തെറ്റിദ്ധരിക്കയും ചെയ്യും. 1980—കളുടെ അവസാനത്തില്‍ കളിഭ്രാന്തു പിടിപെട്ട പുത്തങ്കൂറ്റ് ക്രിക്കറ്റ് പ്രേമികളുടെ കൂടെക്കൂട്ടിയാല്‍ 'ആണും പെണ്ണും കെട്ടവനേ' എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്നതിനേക്കാള്‍ അപമാനം തോന്നും. അയ്യോ, പുത്തങ്കൂറ്റ് ക്രിക്കറ്റ്പ്രേമികള്‍ ആണും പെണ്ണും കെട്ടവരാണ് എന്നല്ല കെട്ടൊ ഇതിനര്‍ത്ഥം. അവര് നല്ല ക്രിക്കറ്റ് പ്രേമികള്‍ തന്നെ. പക്ഷേ എഴുപതുകളില്‍, ബ്ലാക്ക് ആന്‍ഡ് വൈറ്റ് ദിനപത്രങ്ങളുടേയും ട്രാന്‍സിസ്റ്റര്‍ റേഡിയോയുടേയും കാലത്ത്, തെങ്ങിന്റെ കവളമ്മടല്‍ വെട്ടിയുണ്ടാക്കിയ ബാറ്റുകൊണ്ട്, ടെന്നീസ് ബോളുകൊണ്ടല്ല, അഞ്ചര ഔണ്‍സ് തൂക്കമുള്ള കോര്‍ക്കിന്റെയും ലെതറിന്റെയും സാക്ഷാല്‍ ക്രിക്കറ്റ് ബോളുകള്‍ കൊണ്ട് കളിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയതായതുകൊണ്ട്, ക്രിക്കറ്റ് ഐക്യുവും ഈക്യുവും ലേശം കൂടുതാലായിപ്പോയതിന്റെ ഈഗോപാലകൃഷ്ണമേനോന്‍. ഷെമിച്ചു ബേഗലു. മാറ്റപ്പാടം എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഞങ്ങളുടെ സ്ക്കൂള്‍ ഗ്രൌണ്ടില്‍ ഞങ്ങളുടെ സ്ക്കൂള്‍ വേന‍ക്കാലത്ത് മിനര്‍വ ക്ലബ്ബുകാരുടെ ഫുട്ബോള്‍ ടൂര്‍ണമെന്റ് പതിവുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ചേന്ദമംഗലം മിനര്‍വ, ചേന്ദമംഗലത്തു തന്നെയുള്ള കിഴക്കുമ്പുറത്തുകാരുടെ ബ്ലൂ സ്റ്റാര്‍ [മിനര്‍വയില്‍ ഏതാണ്ട് മുഴുവനും നായമ്മാരായിരുന്നുവെന്നും ചേന്ദമംഗലത്തിന്റെ വിമതജഴ്സിയണിഞ്ഞ ബ്ലൂ സ്റ്റാറില്‍ നിറയെ അവര്‍ണരായിരുന്നെന്നും സ്ഥലകാലങ്ങളുടെ അകല്‍ച്ച സാധ്യമാക്കുന്ന സുരക്ഷിതത്വത്തിലും യാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യബോധത്തിലുമിരുന്ന് ഇന്ന് പറയാന്‍ പറ്റും], പറവൂര്‍ പാന്തേഴ്സ് [എല്ലാ കഥയിലും ഉണ്ടാകുമല്ലൊ ഒരു കര്‍ണന്‍. ചേന്ദമംഗലം എല്‍.പി. സ്കൂളിനോട് ചേര്‍ന്ന വീട്ടുകാരനാണെങ്കിലും അടുത്ത ടൌണായ പറവൂരെ ഏതോ ഡെയറിയിലായിരുന്നു ജോലി എന്നതുകൊണ്ട് പാന്തേഴ്സിനു വേണ്ടിയായിരുന്നു ശിവങ്കുട്ടി കളിച്ചത്], ആലുവ ലക്കി സ്റ്റാര്‍, ആലുവ ജി.ടി.എന്‍ ടെക്സ്റ്റയിത്സ് , കറുകുറ്റി പ്രീമിയര്‍ കേബിള്‍സ്, ശ്രീമൂലനഗരത്തെയും ഓച്ചന്തുരുത്തിലെയുമെല്ലാം ഏതോ ക്ലബ്ബുകള്‍... അഞ്ചാം ക്ലാസിലെത്തും മുമ്പേ ഫിക്സ്ചര്‍ എന്ന വാക്കു പഠിച്ചതിന് എന്റെ പേരില്‍ കുറ്റമില്ല വണ്‍ ടൂ ത്രീ. പ്രീമിയര്‍ കേബിള്‍സായിരുന്നു സ്ഥിരം വിന്നര്‍. ലക്കിസ്റ്റാറായിരുന്നു പലപ്പോഴും റണ്ണറപ്പ്. പട്യാല എന്നും വിളിപ്പേരുണ്ടായിരുന്ന കേബിള്‍സിന്റെ പട്ടി മത്തായിയായിരുന്നു എല്ലാവരാലും വെറുക്കപ്പെട്ട നമ്പര്‍ വണ്‍ ഹീറോ [നമ്പര്‍ ടൂവിനെ ദൂരദര്‍ശിനി വെച്ച് നോക്കണം. ആരായിരുന്നൊ ആവോ!]. മാറ്റപ്പാടത്തിന്റെ ഒരറ്റത്തു നിന്ന് അയാള്‍ അടിയ്ക്കുന്ന അടികള്‍ ചിലപ്പോള്‍ ഇപ്പുറത്ത് ഔട്ടും കടന്ന് പോയി! അയാളുടെ ചില ഗോളുകള്‍ വല തകര്‍ക്കുമെന്ന് തോന്നി. അയാള്‍ ബോളും കൊണ്ട് കേറി വരുമ്പോള്‍ ഇപ്പുറത്ത് ഗോളി നിന്നിരുന്ന ഏത് ഹിഗ്വിറ്റയ്ക്കും മൂത്രം ഉറഞ്ഞുപൊയ്ക്കാണുമെന്നുറപ്പ്. ഒരിയ്ക്കല്‍ അയാളടിച്ച ബോള്‍ ചെന്നു കൊണ്ട് മിനര്‍വയുടെ ഒരേയൊരു സ്റ്റാര്‍ പ്ലെയറായിരുന്ന ഫോര്‍വേഡ് ബാബുട്ടന്റെ കയ്യൊടിഞ്ഞു. ആതിഥേയരായ മിനര്‍വ ക്വാര്‍ട്ടര്‍ കടന്ന ചരിത്രമില്ലാത്തതുകൊണ്ട് ബാബുട്ടനില്ലാതെ സെമി കളിയ്ക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു തുടങ്ങിയ ഗുലുമാലുകളൊന്നും ഉണ്ടായില്ല. എങ്കിലും അക്കൊല്ലത്തെ മിനര്‍വയുടെ തുടര്‍ന്നുള്ള കളികളില്‍ കളിയ്ക്കാന്‍ വയ്യാതെ കയ്യില്‍ പ്ലാസ്റ്ററിട്ട് റഫറി നിന്ന ബാബുട്ടന്‍ ഞങ്ങളുടെ നാട്ടുനോവ് കൂട്ടി. ആലുവ ലക്കി സ്റ്റാറിന്റെ ഗോളിയും ക്യാപ്റ്റനുമായിരുന്ന മത്തങ്ങാ വര്‍ഗീസായിരുന്നു നാട്ടുകാരായിരുന്ന ബാബുട്ടനോളവും ടീനേജ് സ്റ്റാര്‍ പീതാംബരനോളവും തന്നെ മിക്കവാറും എല്ലാവരും സ്നേഹിച്ചിരുന്ന ഹീറോ. ആലുവാ മാര്‍ക്കറ്റില്‍ പോര്‍ട്ടറാണ് അയാളെന്നും ലോറിയില്‍ നിന്ന് എറിഞ്ഞ് അണ്‍ലോഡ് ചെയ്യുന്ന മത്തങ്ങ വീഴാതെ പിടിച്ചു പിടിച്ചാണ് അയാള്‍ ഗോളിയും 'മത്തങ്ങാ' വര്‍ഗീസുമായതെന്നായിരുന്നു ഒരു കഥ. ഒരു ഫൈനലിന് അയാള്‍ എല്ലാരെയും ഞെട്ടിച്ചു. പട്ടി മത്തായിയുടെ ഗോളാകുമായിരുന്ന പൊന്നീച്ച പറന്ന അഞ്ചാറ് അടികളാണ് അയാള്‍ തടുത്തു തെറിപ്പിച്ചത്. ഓരോ തവണയും അന്ന് ഉയര്‍ന്ന ആരവങ്ങള്‍ ഇപ്പോഴും ചെവിയില്‍ മുഴങ്ങുന്നു. ഒടുക്കം റഫറി അംബ്രോസ് ലോംഗ് വിസിലടിയ്ക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ലക്കി സ്റ്റാറും കേബിള്‍സും രണ്ടേ രണ്ട് സമാസമം. [കരുത്തനും കറുത്ത സുന്ദരനുമായിരുന്ന അംബ്രോസ് അകാലത്തില്‍ പിടിപെട്ട മാരകമായ ഒരു വാതരോഗം കാരണം റഫറിയായതാണ്. പിന്നീട് നക്സല്‍, സാക്ഷരതാ, വായനശാല പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളില്‍ സജീവമായിരുന്ന അംബ്രോസ് അകാലത്തില്‍ത്തന്നെ മണ്ണോടു ചേര്‍ന്നു]. പെനാല്‍റ്റി കിക്ക് കാത്തു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ഗോളിയുടെ ഏകാന്തത - The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick - എന്ന് ചെറുകഥയിലെ പെലെയായ എന്‍. എസ്. മാധവന്‍ എഴുതിയത് മുന്‍കാല പ്രാബല്യത്തോടെ മൂന്നാല് ഗ്രാമങ്ങള്‍ ഒരുമിച്ച്, ഒരേ ശ്വാസത്തില്‍ [ഒരു തവണപോലും ശ്വാസം വിടാതെ] തിരുത്തിയ ഒരു 'ബെനാള്‍ട്ടി'യായിരുന്നു പിന്നീട്. ചതിയനായ ദൈവം മാത്രം എന്നത്തേയും പോലെ അന്നും ബലവാന്മാരോടും ധനികരോടും ഒപ്പം നിന്നു. [മിനര്‍വ ടൂര്‍ണമെന്റില്‍ കളിച്ചിരുന്ന രണ്ടേ രണ്ട് കോര്‍പ്പറേറ്റ് ടീംസായിരുന്നു കേബിള്‍സും ജീടീഎന്നും]. ജീടീഎന്നിലെ ജോലിക്കാരനും ടീം മെമ്പറുമായിരുന്നു ചേന്ദമംഗലത്തുകാരന്‍ തന്നെയായിരുന്ന ഉണ്ണിച്ചേട്ടന്‍ എന്നും ജീടീയെന്‍ എന്നും അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന മാവേലിലെ കൃഷ്ണകുമാര്‍ [ബാബുട്ടന്റെ കസിന്‍]. ഷട്ടില്‍ കോക്ക് കോര്‍ട്ടില്‍ തീപാറുന്ന എയ്സുകള്‍ ഉതിര്‍ത്തും ലൈബ്രറിയുടെ മുമ്പിലെ പിച്ചില്‍ തല കൊയ്യാന്‍ പോന്ന തകര്‍പ്പന്‍ ബൌണ്‍സറുകളെറിഞ്ഞും ഒരേപോലെ തിളങ്ങിയ ഉണ്ണിച്ചേട്ടനെ പിന്നെ എറണാകുളത്തുവെച്ച് ചിത്രകാരന്‍ ടി. കലാധര‍ന്റെ അളിയനായി കണ്ടു. അതിന്റെയെല്ലാം ഉയരത്തില്‍ സമാന്തരമായിട്ടായിരുന്നു നജിമുദ്ദീനും സേവ്യര്‍ പയസ്സും സേതുമാധവനും വിക്ടര്‍ മഞ്ഞിലയുമെല്ലാമെഴുതിയ സന്തോഷ് ട്രോഫിയുടെയും ചാക്കോളാ ഗോള്‍ഡ് ട്രോഫിയുടെയും നാഗ്ജി കപ്പിന്റേയും പ്രീമിയര്‍ ടയേഴ്സിന്റേയും ടൈറ്റാനിയത്തിന്റേയുമെല്ലാം വീരഗാഥകള്‍; ആ ഗാഥകളെ ടെലിവിഷനും എത്രയോ മുമ്പ്,
