Manipur win Junior Girls Top
Manipur bagged their sixth Junior National Championship title for Girls drubbing Haryana 6-1 in the grand finale played today at Chandigarh here on Friday. After going down in the finals of the last two editions of the tournament, Manipur girls broke their hoodoo to thrash Haryana with ease. Rima Roy scored a fine hat-trick, while Beena Devi, Bindya Rani and Kamla Devi were the other scorers. Priti scored the only goal for the Haryana. Haryana took a surprised lead in the 11th minute through Priti, while Rima Roy levelled the terms for Manipur in the 20th minute. There was no stopping to Manipur after the first goal and went ahead in the match for the first time in the 47th minute with Beena Devi finding the back of the net. Two minutes later, Bindya Rani took the match away from Haryana's reach scoring the third goal, while Rima Roy completed her brace in the 61st minute. Kamala Devi joined the part and scored the fifth goal in the 67th minute before Rima Roy put the final nail in Haryana's coffin scoring her third and Manipur's sixth goal.

Tamilnadu blank Mizoram Top
Tamilnadu started their Santosh Trophy campaign on a winning note score a 2-0 facile victory over Mizoram in the second quarterfinal group B league match played at the Salt Lake stadium here on Friday evening. C.S. Sabeeth opened the accounts for Tamilnadu in the second half after a pale first session, while R. Rajesh scored the second for the last year's semi-finalist. Both the teams took a cautious approach as neither of the two looked sharp in their attack. Mizoram, who upset Kerala in the pre-quarters looked better in the initial stage of the game, but failed to carry on the momentum and were force to share the spoils in the first half with the scoreline reading 0-0. Tamilnadu who kept measuring their opponent with some fine counter-attacks, finally got the equaliser in the 61st minute with Viva Kerala striker C.S. Sabeeth heading in from a close range. It was former Mahindra United stopper D. Ravanan free-kick that paved the way for the opener, Mizoram goalkeeper Danny Rohlua completely missing the flight of the ball which gave Sabeeth chance to book his name in the scoresheet. Tamilnadu extended their lead in the 73rd minute with a brilliant move involving C.S.Sabeeth and goal scorer R. Rajesh. Sabeeth received a pass from the right and made a swift run before brilliantly putting it for Rajesh, who made no mistake to put Tamilnadu on the driver seat. Tamilnadu moves at the top of the Group B table with three points after Delhi and West Bengal played a 1-1 draw sharing second and third spot, while Mizoram loss put them at the last place.

Jayanta Sen saved the day for Bengal Top
Twenty nine times record champions , West Bengal came from a goal down to hold Delhi 1-1 in their opening quarterfinal league round match played at the Salt Lake Stadium here. In-form striker, Tuisim Mashngva once again found the back of the net for Ranjit Thapa coached side, while Mohun Bagan midfielder Jayanta Sen saved the day for Bengal scoring down the wire. Bengal did enjoy better ball possession than their opponents, but failed to utilize the chances that came in their way. Tarif Ahmed right footer in the 14th minute sailed over the woodwork, while six minutes later, Delhi's goalkeeper came up with a fine save to deny Bengal's striker Robin Singh. With Bengal missing lots of chances, Delhi grab the only chance that fell in their kitty in the first half with both hands as Tuishim headed in brilliantly off a cross from the right flank. The scoreline read 1-0 in favour of Delhi at lemon break, but they failed to hold on their one goal advantage and conceded a late equaliser to deny themselves from a famous win. Jayanta Sen ended Bengal frustration in the87th minute, after they came close on numerous occasions to level the terms. The former Chirag United midfielder right footer held its way to the far post to score the equaliser. Delhi has certainly raised their chances to stay in the hunt after managing a point against Bengal, while Bengal will seriously need to leave their not so impressive outing behind when they take on Mizoram in the next match.

India beat local side 6-2 in 2nd practice match in Portugal Top
Indian national football team thrashed Portuguese third division side Desportivo Monsanto 6-2 in their second practice match of the two-month training tour of the Iberian country in Vieria de Leiria. Mohammed Rafi struck twice (40th and 58th), while Renedy Singh (20th), Anthony Pereira (42nd), Abhishek Yadav (44th) and Clifford Miranda (65th) scored a goal each for India in the match played at Pilado ground located some 200km from Portuguese capital of Lisbon on the road to Porto. India made two changes in the starting XI which beat Desportivo das Caldas 4-1 in their first practice match with Subrata Pal making way for Subhasish Roy Choudhury while Clifford Miranda replaced injured Steven Dias. It was Desportivo Monsanto who took a surprise lead in the 17th minute, but Renedy Singh brought India back on track scoring from the spot three minutes later after one of the defenders of the local side handled the ball inside the box. India were ahead for the first time in the match in the 40th minute when Rafi and Pereira combined well before the former fired home. Anthony and Rafi were once again in the thick of action, but it was the former's turn to register his name in the scoresheet two minutes later. Abhishek then made it 4-1 just a minute before halftime heading in a Renedy Singh flag-kick. Bob Houghton brought in eight players in the second half with only goalkeeper Subhasish Roy Choudhury, Clifford Miranda and Rafi remaining unchanged. Rafi scored his second goal in the 58th minute off a James Singh pass from the right while Miranda completed India's tally in the 65th minute before Desportivo Monsanto decreased the deficit in the 78th minute following a goal mouth melee. The Indians will wound up their month-long training at Vieria de Leiria and leave for Lisbon tomorrow for another month-long stint at Sporting Lisbon facilities as part of their preparations for the 2011 Asian Cup.

Appoint SAI DG as Hockey India Administrator: Dr Malik Top
Custom Search by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir) CHANDIGARH, JULY 29  "Its a doom day for Indian hockey." This crisp comment was made by former Indian Hockey Federation vice-president and former Haryana Director General of Police, Dr M S Malik, while expressing his anguish at the sorry state of affairs in the Indian hockey. With elections of Hockey India, which were scheduled for yesterday, getting postoned indefinitely following a court order, Dr Malik suggested that Director General of Sports Authority of India should be appointed the Administrator of Hockey India-IHF. Elaborating the function under the SAI Director General, 1998 Bangkok Asian Games gold medal winning Indian hockey team manager, Dr Malik said that three former Indian hockey captains should be in the panel to man the affair of Indian hockey. One female Olympian hockey player must be included in the panel. "This panel should continue to select, train and send teams for the international tournaments, including New Delhi Commonwealth Games, World Cup for Women, Asian Games and Olympic Games. The panel should continue under the overall charge of the SAI Director General till new office-bearers are elected democratically," said Dr Malik who is actively associated with the Indian hockey for the last three decades. "A panel of selectors (Olympians) should be appointed for selection of the Indian teams for various interntional tournaments. They should attend all national level tournaments and spot the talents. They must be present all days of the tournaments. It should not be confined to performing formalities while shortlisting the players for coaching camps or the selecting the teams. The SAI DGP must ensure the presence of selectors at the important tournaments," said Dr Malik. A physical trainer must be taken on the panel, according to Dr Malik who also advised that personal interference by officials of the Indian Olympic Association and Indian Hockey Federation in the affairs of Indian hockey must be stopped immediately in the interest of sports. "The pitable situation in the Indian hockey is due to personal ego of certain persons who are virtually ruining sports in the country. With a view to ending bickering all sports cases pending in the various courts across the country should be withdrawn," said Dr Malik. It may be mentioned that Dr Malik had earlier said that Olympian and Padamshree Pargat Singh is the right choice for the Hockey India.

Goa to edge past Karnataka by 1-0 Top
An injury time strike by the Substitute Cavin Lobo helped Goa to edge past Karnataka by a solitary goal in their opening quarterfinal league encounter played at the Salt lake Stadium here on Thursday. Both the teams started the match on the slower note and failed to break the dead lock as stalemate prevailed over the first 45 minutes. A much better performance was expected from the reigning champions in the second half, but their casual approach and lack of combination in the midfield certainly spoiled the day before substitute Cavin Lobo scored the winner in the injury time. Cavin replaced Milagres Gonsalves in the 55th minute and did give some tough time to the Karnataka defence since his induction. The striker finally broke the jinx with a clean strike from the top of the box to give his side a winning start to their Santosh Trophy campaign.
