Interview with Lajong's coach Stanley Rozario Top
By our Sports Reporter GUWAHATI, Dec, 29: It is the first year for Shillong Lajong FC in the big league and in the very first year they have impressed one and all. The man who deserves all the credit is its coach Stanley Rozario . If there was any doubt regarding the Club's ability at the big stage, that has been laid to rest by a semi final performance in the Federation Cup Tournament. And it is not over yet. Just 24 hours before its semi final match against Churchil Brothers, Rozario in a conversation with The Sentinel shares his experience and the prospects of the Club. Here is an excerpt This is the maiden appearance of your team in the Federation Cup soccer tournament and you are in the semi final in the first go. How do you feel? It is a really a great achievement for us. Just a few months back, we qualified for the I League and to reach into the semi final of the Fedration Cup, the top club level soccer tournament of the country, is really a fantastic experience. Your team is now in under process to build itself for the big league. So, does the result surprise you? No, not at all. My team is lagging behind only in experience. Otherwise, we have all the qualities that are required to perform consistency in the big arena. I am really not surprised to see that my team is in the semi final of the Federation Cup Soccer championship. Who deserves the credit for this? I feel it is the result of a well-combined effort from players, support-staff and club management. For the last few months, we have been working together as a unit. It is nice to see the results coming. Perhaps there is no time to relax as you have to face Churchill Brothers in the crucial semi final? Absolutely. They are a very good side. The team has a player like Odafa who can alone turn a game in favour of his team. Churchill Brothers coach Carlos Pareira, too, is a very experienced campaigner. So it would be a tough game for us. You have nothing to lose. So don't you feel the pressure would be on your opponent? Yes, we don't have anything to lose in this match. We would go into the ground as an underdog whereas they are one of the favourites for the tournament. I feel pressure would be on them. Your two forwards - Tuboi and Gurung have come under the spot light of the big clubs of the country. Will they possibly be your trump card in the semi final? I think so. Both are really very good forwards and are able to tear apart the defence of any side. I feel Tuboi has the potential to play for the country at the highest level What about your defence? I understand what you are hinting at. Yes on a few occasions, we could not retain our lead, including once in this tournament. We are working on this area. Earlier, you coached team like Salgaocar and East Bengal. What was the immediate reaction when you first got the call from this Shillong outfit? Actually I got call from several clubs but I preferred Lajong as I knew that the players of the North-east are very talented and hard working. I had the confidence that I would be able to take the team to a certain height and so I took the challenge. Have you taken any different approach or strategy to work with Shillong Lajong? Yes. Look when you work with the team like Salgaoncar and East Bengal then you don't have to do too much. Players of those clubs are highly experienced. But here the case is completely different. Apart from coaching, I have to work to motivate the players as well. What is your take on football standard in the North-east? I have already said that there is enough talent in North-east. But facilities need to be provided immediately if we really want to improve the standard. Development of infrastructure should be on top of the list. We have to take few youth and coaches development programme. On the other hand, teams from the region should take part more often at the all India level soccer competitions. THE SENTINEL

In Guwahati Shillong Lajong F C face Churchil Brothers in the first semifinal at Nehru Stadium Top
By our Sports Reporter GUWAHATI, Dec 29: History awaits at Nehru Stadium in Guwahati when the new force of Indian football Shillong Lajong F C will take on Churchill Brothers in the 1st semifinal of Hero Honda 31st Federation Cup which is scheduled to be held on Wednesday. The game will kick off at 5 pm. So far Shillong Lajong F C have had a dream run in their very first appearance of the Federation Cup. The side were placed in group 'D' during league phase of the championship and it was Dempo who was the favourite to qualify for the semifinal from that group. But a fantastic performance from Shillong outfit proved the soccer pundits wrong and are in the last four of the tournament. On paper Churchill Brothers are much ahead of Lajong. The Goan outfit, who are in the top positions in the points table of the I league, are eyeing for their third title this year. Earlier, they won IFA Shield and the prestigious Durand Cup and will look to end this year on a winning note. In the group league matches at Silchar the side won all the three matches which itself indicates that the team is in a very good shape and eagerly waiting for their maiden appearance in the final of the Federation Cup. However, the coach of Churchill Brothers, Carlos Pereira does not seem to be in a relaxed mood though the side will face an easier team in the semifinal. Talking to the media persons just after the final practise session at the Nehru Stadium today, Carlos Pereira didn't agree to admit that it is an easy match for his side. "I feel Lajong is a very good side and to take them lightly could create problems for us. I have no hesitation to say that among the newcomers in the I league, Lajong is the best." He also praised the performance of Shillong Lajong F C's two forwards — Tuboi and Gurung. It will be a great day for the region if the Shillong outfit could manage a berth in the last two of the championship though it looks a bit difficult. But the team is confident and ready to give their best shot forward in the D-Day. The coach of the side Stanley Rozario said, "We are playing very well in this tournament and hope to continue it in the next match also." Stanley's biggest threat comes from Churchill Brothers' 'Goal Machine' Odafa. "Odafa is a key player of the side and can change the fate of the match on his own. We will have to give special attention to him." Apart from Odafa, Khan Thang Paite is the other player of Churchill who can create problem in Lajong's defence. It may be mentioned here that Odafa along with Khan Thang Paite and Mohun Bagan's Jose Ramirez Barreto are the leading scorers in this competition with three goals each. However, Shillong Lajong FC skipper Aibor Khonjee looks doubtful for the all important semifinal due to groin injury. Rozario didn't make any direct comment on his availability on the next match but said that he is recovering well. THE SENTINEL

Meghalaya Govt. must help Lajong : Bhaichung Bhutia Top
GUWAHATI, Dec 28: Indian Captain Bhaichung Bhutia has praised Shillong Lajong FC for their performance in the 31st Federation Cup Soccer Tournament and said that the club is gradually becoming a force to reckon with. At the same time he also requested Meghalaya Government to support the club as he felt that their rise will help uplift the standard of football in Meghalaya as well as the entire region. Bhutia arrived in the city with East Bengal Club to play the second semifinal of Federation Cup against their arch rivals Mohun Bagan at the Nehru Stadium on Thursday. He also made a brief visit at the Nehru Stadium this afternoon with his teammates and coach Phillipe De Ridder to see the turf. Talking to the mediapersons just after inspection of the ground, Bhaichung today highly praised the performance of Stanley Rozario's team. Replying to a query the ace striker said, "Lajong is a good outfit and they are really playing well. But I think the side could easily raise their standard of game higher if they got some supports from outside and I think in this case Meghalaya Government should come forward." Justifying his suggestion to provide help to Lajong, Bhutia said, "A side needed a few basic things to upgrade their skill and one of them is a good ground. But the ground where Lajong team practise at Shillong is not in a good shape and if Meghalaya Government could take initiative and renovate the ground then it would definitely help a lot to Lajong." It may be mentioned here that Bhaichung Bhutia returned to football after recovering an injury and he played his first match against JCT at Silchar yesterday where the star striker scored a goal. His team's next rival is Mohun Bagan and the game will be held on Thursday evening. Bhutia sent a caution note to his opponent saying that East Bengal are not a side to beat easily. "We know Baretto and Chiddi, two forwards of Mohun Bagan, are in good form but we are too performing well. We even won the last game playing ten men against JCT. So I feel there is a nice contest on the card on Thursday and the crowd of Guwahati would witness a very good game." For record, it would be Bhaichung's first game against Mohun Bagan after he returned to East Bengal this season. Meanwhile, the performance of East Bengal team is not up to the mark this season and the side even suffered a 3-5 defeat against the Mariners in an I-League match. Bhutia admitted that their team was in a bad phase, however, it would not last long. "We are confident that we will play good soccer here and would be able to lift the trophy." THE SENTINEL
