Licensed negotiator – The only 3 FIFA approved Player Agents from India Top
By Micky Aigner Posted On Monday, April 26, 2010 at 10:07:13 PM Pune: In a span of six months, city football seems to be going through the roof in terms of achievement. From having a team make it to the I-League to conducting a National U-23 camp, a city official appointed as manager of the Indian squad, to the establishment of a Football Development Centre, Pune now has heard it all. Monday saw another first when 30-year-old Jehan Kothary passed the FIFA Player's Agent Examination conducted by the All India Football Association (AIFF) for the first time. In doing so, Kothary is one of the three out of 10 aspirants from all over India to appear and clear this first of its kind exam that was held on April 15 in New Delhi. Kothary's success in this branch of the game, which usually flourishes in Europe and other continents on a large scale, is the perseverance of someone who has a diehard passion to be involved with a sport he so passionately followed. Of course, it all began with being a player himself, which includes being part of the PDFA League by turning up for Ex-Loyola Students Association (ELSA) and Deccan XI FC, respectively, for about four years. Thrilled by the result, Kothary now awaits his licence, after which he is entitled to add the title: Players' Agent licensed by the AIFF. This means that, in future, there is a possibility that Jehan may be dealing with a few big names, negotiating deals for them with Indian clubs and, with luck, 'other clubs' (read: European) as well. With AIFF 'officially' sending him a communiqué signed by honorary secretary Albert Colaco on Saturday, Kothary says, "The plan is to get into the football player management scene, with an aim to provide better opportunities to existing and upcoming footballers to play the game professionally." For the record, Kothary has been in sports marketing/ consulting for the past five years, and is also part of Sportnexus —a sports management company —and partner in Integrated Sports Management. Simply put, he is not in an out-of-the-box situation, just that in becoming an 'agent' he has a particular focus. "Football it will be hereafter. I always dreamed to be in some way associated closely with the sport," says Kothary, who says he is "super-inspired" by Pinhas "Pini" Zahavi, an Israel-born football agent who has been involved in some of the most expensive transfers in the footballing world. So, any player in mind to sign up? Says Kothary, "I have got a player from Goa who played for Sesa and is looking for an I-League break… so let's see. I haven't signed him, but may do it next week." Having set foot in unknown territory, Kothary certainly does not know what is in store for him for now. But then, if one thinks about how many will actually want to self-fund his own trip for an exam on a subject very nascent in India, one will either think he's crazy or knows what to do hereafter.

'Need to break away from tradition Top
"Nostalgia is your biggest enemy!" This was what India hockey coach Jose Brasa had to say when asked about the reason for the sport's decline in the country. The Spaniard was only referring to hockey, a sport in which India can boast of eight Olympic gold medals and a world title, but the statement could apply to Indian football as well. Alberto Colaco, the general secretary of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), admitted at the India Football Forum 2010 in New Delhi on Thursday that a lot of work needed to be done to improve the state of affairs of Indian football. But he admitted that tradition and age-old practices come in the way of change and new policies. "There are lots of changes that Indian football needs, to go to the next level. Most of the changes need to be implemented at the club level. But unfortunately, most of the clubs are over a hundred years old. They are bound by tradition," he said. "Either they are scared of change or they refuse to break away from tradition. Why would they listen to FIFA when these clubs are older than FIFA?" he added. Marcus Luer, the CEO of Total Sports Asia, also believes that Indian football needs to let go of the past if it is to move forward. "Any tradition that comes in the way of progress is a hindrance," he stated. "Tradition is good. Wimbledon has its charm for a reason. But tradition should not grab importance at the expense of growth." Kolkata has been synonymous with Indian football for very long, but Luer fears this may not be the case for too long. "Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have such a huge following because of their rich history. But their standards have fallen in the last few years. They need to change and adapt, and implement new ideas," said the German. "Bayern (Munich) have a long history, so do Manchester United. All big European clubs have a legacy, but they are still successful only because they did not get caught up in tradition. They are not what they were twenty or fifty years ago," he continued. For the 2010-11 I-League season, the AIFF is planning to include a Delhi-based team comprising only of India Under-19 players, in a bid to prepare them for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. The idea has come under fire from all quarters, but the AIFF is adamant on implementing it. The proposal has it shortcomings, but it also has its advantages. But more than anything, it is different from everything we've seen so far. It goes to prove that Indian football is not afraid of change, of breaking tradition. Perhaps all hope is not lost after all.

UB Group rethinking their investment in East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Top
After Mahindra Group, a lot of corporates are having a re-think about their investment in Indian soccer clubs. As Indian football saw the last of famed Mumbai outfit Mahindra United on Thursday, another corporate United Breweries (UB), sponsors of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, indicated that they may also go the Mahindra way as they are not getting enough returns from their investment. Both the Kolkata clubs get around Rs.50-70 million anually from the UB Group. Fraser Castellino, chief operating officer of sports marketing business of UB Group, made it clear that the All India football Federation (AIFF) has a lot of work to do in revamping the I-league if they don't want corporates shutting down clubs in future. "It is unfortunate that Mahindra is closing down. But at the end of the day, AIFF should understand that we (corporates) are investing in Indian football, because we expect more in return," said Castellino Thursday on the sidelines of Indian Football Forum here organised by SportzPower. "We are not getting the kind of return that we expect. But we remain optimistic about that. A lot has to be done by the AIFF to ensure that corporates stay in Indian football. We hope that we would get it and we are giving it an year's time to see how things shape up in the I-League," he added. UB Group is not the only corporate to sound its concerns and recently Samir Thapar, managing director of JCT, which owns the JCT football club, also expressed his displeasure with the way the I-League is being run by the AIFF. "Mahindra's decision to pull out is very sad. But why blame them. The I-League has no charm and value and is not being run in a professional way. I am not sure how long we would be able to sustain," Thapar had said. AIFF officials admitted that there are problems with the I-League. I-League's chief executive officer Sunando Dhar said: "There is no doubt that Mahindra's decision to disband the club is extremely unfortunate. And as AIFF president (Praful Patel) has also admitted that we need to revamp the I-League from the next session. We are working with sponsors and broadcasters to package and market the I-League in a better way." Club officials are also a worried lot. A top official in East Bengal said that it is an alarming situation and blamed the AIFF for the lacklustre I-League. "The I-League is the property of the AIFF, so who should be blamed for it. The AIFF is always passing the blame on to the clubs, but they have to accept that I-League's marketing and broadcasting deals are in a complete mess," the official said.

Curtain to come down on Mahindra United Thursday Top

Football in the pind Top
At Phagwara station, we virtually dragged ourselves out of the train. The rush was amazing. It was a Saturday and most Delhiites hop onto this particular train to head towards Golden Temple in Amritsar. But unlike our co-passengers, we got off at Phagwara. Travelling with a group of young footballers, we wanted to discover football in a pind (village) in Punjab rather than going to Amritsar for a quick weekend tour. We have so far heard about football cultures and traditions of Calcutta, Goa and Kerala. But Punjab seemed to be very different. As the bus weaved past the vast agricultural lands on our way from Phagwara station to Rurka (some 15 kms from Phagwara), we were thrilled. It was April end. Yet, the heat was tolerable. A village in the Tehsil Phillaur in Jalandhar, Rurka is entirely different. It is a quiet, serene and a sleepy village. Other neighbouring villages include Bundala, Kahna Dhesian, Dhinpur, Bir Bansian and Pasla. In fact, Hans Raj Hans song ' Pind Diyan Galliyan ' becomes so much true as the bus moved a little deeper into the rural village Rurka Kalan which lies on the Jandiala-Goraya road. A youth football academy in a village? That sounds quite interesting. But before I write about the academy, let me introduce you to Gurmangal Dass Soni. Soft-spoken and affable, Gurmangal, however, isn't a former footballer or a coach who talks big about his past achievements. Neither he is a referee or anybody in the football establishment 'talking, talking but doing nothing'. Interestingly, he is an electronic engineer who is crazy about football. In 1998, this young man now in his late-30s decided to create a football platform so that he can help and promote his own village kids. He left a cushy engineering job in the US and engaged himself to work round the clock for football, selflessly. He formed the Youth Football Club in 1997 which soon got involved in a big way in football promotion at Rurka Kalan. With the help of local villagers and NRIs, he got a great amount of monetary support to run the project. With around 15-20 footballers, Gurmangal started his team, took part in tournaments and even started winning them. The cash awards won from the tournaments were deposited in a bank and soon he was able to collect Rs 80,000 from the prize money. His own family also extended support. They chipped in with Rs 1 lakh per year. The villagers also joined them in his effort to promote the game at the grassroot level. The YFC has produced six international players from the current Anwar Ali (India and Dempo) to Surjit Singh Sandhu, Narinder Kumar Kaushal, Narinder Kumar Gill, Kulwant Singh and Baljinder Singh. Today the club boasts of a Youth and Sports Complex, which houses a hostel for 24 players, a computer laboratory, a multi-purpose gymnasium and well-manicured ground. Besides, YFC and the academy has also tied up with two schools where the students are given free education. At present, the academy has 125 players in the U-12, U-14, U-17, U-19 and senior club categories. All the trainees are provided free boarding and lodging, kit and education. The Sports Department is bearing the expenses of the 15 students. The club has roped in four coaches -– Jatinder Sharma, Amarjit Dari, a former JCT player, and Kulwant Bunty, a former international player, and Mandeep Kumar of the Sports Department. Another interesting and honest fact about Gurmangal, he doesn't draw salary from this project which has 14 paid staffs for the 125 players and the annual expense has shot up to Rs 24 lakhs per year. Some AIFF and top club officials must take a note of it!
