Punjab beat Karnataka 5-1 Top
In a must win situation to keep their hopes alive for a semi-final spot, Punjab hammered Karnataka 5-1 in their last group league encounter played at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Tuesday. Gurpreet Singh and JCT striker Praveen Kumar scored a brace each, while Rahul Kumar too booked his name in the scoresheet. Former Churchill Brothers and HAL striker R.C. Prakash scored the only goal for Karnataka. Punjab were off to dream start with Gurpreet Singh finding the back of the net twice in just six minutes. Gurpreet opened the accounts for the Northern side in the 5th minute with a superb twenty five yard strike, while a minute later he headed in a cross from the right to put his team on the driver seat. Punjab could have scored the third through Randeep Singh's free kick but to their frustration, his curling right footer hit the woodwork. The urgency to score more and more goals to strengthen their position in the points table was clearly visible and with taking an attacking approach right from the word go, Punjab at times gave Karnataka to try their luck. R.C. Prakash brilliantly dodged past two Punjab defenders to bring his side back in the match in the 40th minute. Punjab learned from their mistake and started the second half cleverly. Parveen Kumar who was chosen ahead of Balraj Singh in the starting XI proved his selection right and extended his side lead in the 66th minute, while substitute Rohit Kumar headed in a Parveen Kumar flag kick to make it 4-1 in the 87th minute. Praveen rounded off Punjab's emphatic win by netting in his second goal with a clean strike from the top of the box in the added time. Punjab have now accumulated six points from two matches, but still to seal their place in the semi-final , they will have to wait for the result of Goa and Services match.
