Services down Karnataka Top
Services notched up their first victory in the quarterfinal league edging past Karnataka 2-1 in a Group A encounter played at the Salt Lake Stadium, here on Saturday. After going down to Punjab in the first encounter, Services looked sharp in their attack and spurned in numerous chances in the first half , but failed to break the jinx as the scoreline read 0-0 after the end of the first half proceedings. Services midfielder, Mahesh Rai who had a good day at the office came with the first effort of the match, but to Services dismay, his right footer couldn't trouble the rival goalkeeper. Three minutes later, Karnataka could have scored through former Churchill Brothers striker R.C. Prakash, but he failed to give the desired direction to Ramu V's cross from the right flank. Another chance was wasted by the Services through Shkhohao Tuboi as both the teams shared the spoils at lemon break. After the breather, both the teams brought some lives to the pale encounter with Services breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute through their captain and centre-back Dileep. M finding the target four minutes after Karnataka midfielder Rajendra Prasad hit the woodwork. Dileep headed in a Gordon's free-kick to open the scoring for Services and to give his side the deserved lead. Services kept lurking around their opponent citadel and came close to extend their lead on few occasions. J. Karthigeyan brought Karnataka back to the level terms in the 70th minute after he was left unmarked by the Services defenders; the midfielder had no problem to place his left footer to the near post to find the equaliser for his side. Substitutes Shaji D'Silva then, handed Services three precious points scoring the winner six minutes later as Services kept their hopes alive for a place in the semi-finals, while Karnataka are virtually out of the tournament after going down in both their matches.
