Chandigarh make history by winning U-19 National Football Top
Custom Search by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir) CHANDIGARH, JUNE 27 Chandigarh made a history by winning the coveted Dr B C Roy Trophy after beating hosts and strong contenders West Bengal with an aggregate 6-4 margin in tie-breaker session after playing a one-all draw in the final of the 49th National Junior Under-19 Football Championship which concluded in Kolkata today. The Chandigarh team which was studded with 14 players of the State-owned Chandigarh Football Hockey Academy clinched the glittering trophy for the first time. Captained by Gagandeep Singh and trained by former India captain Tejinder Kumar, a senior football coach of the Chandigarh Sports Department, Chandigarh also gained a sweet revenge over West Bengal who had beaten them by 2-1 in a Group B quarter-final league match. After a 1-1 draw in the regulation period, Chandigarh had to play with 10 members in extra time after Sandesh Jhingani was shown red card in the third minute of the first half time of extra time. The Chandigarh players maintained their cool and did not panick despite playing against tough hosts team. The extra time also could not resolve the deadlock and the match was extened to penalties. Chandigarh converted all their five penalties through Akashdeep Singh, Sumit Passi, Chinkash Tiwari, Gagandeep Singh and Shehnaz Singh. Probir, Lulanpuia and Somnath converted their spot kicks for West Bengal. Bubai amd Rajib Ghouri muffed their tries. In the regulation period, cheered by the home crowd, West Bengal drew the first blood through Rajib Ghouri in the 43rd minute. Down by a goal, the Chandigarh boys played with more determination. Despite facing a tough opponents, Chandigarh neutralised the lead in the 75th minute. Receiving a log from captain Gagandeep Singh, Lalthazuala smartly headed it into the goal to fox the West Bengal defence. Elated coach Tejinder Kumar and manager Rajeev Rattan praised the Chandigarh boys for displaying their determination and coordination to beat West Bengal in their home ground. "After Sandesh Jhingani was shown red card in the early minutes of the first half of extra time, Chandigarh had to play with 10 players. The boys kept their cool and displayed good determination," said the officials. Chandigarh Joint Director Sports Dr JPS Sidhu gave full credits to the players, the coach and the manager and the Chandigarh Football Association for lifting the Dr B C Roy Trophy for the first time. "It is a remarkable victory for Chandigarh in the final. Beating West Bengal on their home pitch is a tremendous success for the joint efforts of the Chandigarh Football Association and the state-owned Chandigarh Football Hockey Academy," said Dr Sidhu. CFA president Venod Sharma and secretary Rakesh Bakshi also expressed their happiness on Chandigarh winning the national title for the first time. "The achievement for Chandigarh is more sweet since they beat holders Karnataka in the semi-final and runners-up Orissa in their prelimininary cluster programme. This is the result of the combined efforts of the CFA and the Chandigarh Administration. The victorious team would be suitably felicitated," said Rakesh Bakshi Meanwhile, in a message to CFA secretary Rakesh Bakshi, All India Football Federation general secretary Alberto Colaco compliment the Chandigarh boys for their outstanding performance. "Keep it up," said Colaco. Congratulating the team former Chandigarh Sports Director Inderjit Singh Sandhu said that "training in Germany and under German coaches in Chandigarh has started bearing fruits. Winning the National title for the first time was made possible due to hard work in the last nine years. During this period the CFHA boys had visited Germany four times for training and the three times German coaches came to Chandigarh to impart advanced training and follow-up action. The football academy boys sharpened their skill and strategy under the German coaches. The international exposure has led to tremendous improvement by the Academy players. The Academy is the brain-child for former Punjab Governor Lt Gen (Retd) JRF Jacob who has a great passion for football as well as other sports," said IS Sandhu.

Maradona: "My dream is to manage Napoli." Top
On the eve of Argentina's key elimination round match with Mexico, Diego Maradona provided his thoughts to the Milan sports daily, La Gazzetta dello Sport. He discussed the shock exit of Italy, his desire to manage Argentina for many years and his dream job: manager of Napoli. He also leveled criticism at Argentine journalists who questioned his management acumen. On Italy: "But one saw that Italy was lacking something." " Mi dispiace tanto che l'Italia sia uscita, perchè in un Mondiale una squadra come quella azzurra non può fermarsi nella prima fase. Ma si vedeva che all'Italia mancava qualcosa, in particolare non portava palla in avanti, e non giocava fluida. Ci sarebbe voluto un giocatore come Totti o Del Piero. Cassano? Sì, forse anche lui, ma non voglio fare critiche a Lippi ". "I'm so sorry that Italy went out. But in a World Cup, a team such as the Azzurri can't stop in the first round. But one saw that Italy was lacking something. In particular, they didn't hold the ball up front and didn't play fluidly. They could have used a player such as Francesco Totti and Alessandro Del Piero . Antonio Cassano ? Yes, perhaps also him, but I don't want to criticize Marcello Lippi ." Diego Maradona with Otto Rehhagel of Greece Wants to Manage Napoli: "Seeing that dreams never die." Diego has been more active than some players at this tournament "I hope to manage Argentina still for many years but I would like to realize another dream. Seeing that dreams never die: To manage Napoli (in the Serie A)… I lived in Italy for seven years and having been in Naples, it was more like 14 years and I will always keep those people in my heart. I know that now since Italy was eliminated, the Neapolitans will support Argentina. For this, I will always keep them in my heart and even if others do it, I will never speak badly about their city." Still at War with Journalists: "But I don't support how my players have been treated…" "I'm almost 50 years of age and in a phase of life in which you don't want to hold grudges. But I don't support how my players have been treated and I would have liked that certain journalists apologized. Before this World Cup, I read very strong criticisms. Certain players were becoming the worst in the world and I shouldn't have selected them. Instead now, after three games, we have become the best of the lot. In reality, we have remained that way with the same idea to come here to the World Cup to do well working hard." Italian source : La Gazzetta dello Sport, June 26, 2010 . Cult Status in Naples Maradona has a cult status in Naples to a degree that is difficult to describe. As they say in Naples, "There is the sea, Vesuvius and Maradona." If you ever meet a young man in his 20s from Naples called "Diego," most likely he was named after Mr. Maradona. Steve Amoia is a freelance writer, editor and translator from Washington, D.C. He writes the World Football Commentaries blog. He has written for AC Cugini Scuola Calcio (Italian soccer school), Football Media, Keeper Skool and Soccerlens. " Maradona: "My dream is to manage Napoli." " was originally published at Soccerlens.com - Football News .
