Myanmar begin campaign in style Top
Myanmar kicked off their AFC Challenge Cup campaign with a comprehensive 4-0 win over 10-man Sri Lanka on Tuesday at Sugathadasa Stadium. Hosts Sri Lanka fought bravely following the early dismissal of experienced defender Thuwan Raheem, but were eventually worn down in the closing stages of the first half as Kyaw Thi Ha fired home. And with Myanmar in full control Yan Paing, second half substitute Pai Soe and captain Myo Min Tun sealed the comfortable win in the second half as Tin Myint Aung's side moved to the top of Group A alongside Bangladesh who earlier recorded a surprise 2-1 win over Tajikistan. Under the floodlights on a humid night in Colombo Sri Lanka's cause was dealt a huge blow after just 17 minutes as Raheem was shown a straight red card following a lunging challenge on Myanmar's Kyaw. Despite the setback Sri Lanka continued to threaten as striker S. Sanjeev sent a looping header over the crossbar before Myanmar's first real chance arrived 11 minutes before the break as Tun Tun Win blazed over from the edge of the area before Yan guided a similar effort just wide three minutes later. And Myanmar's spell of late pressure paid off five minutes before the break as Kyaw fired home a low long range effort past Sri Lanka goalkeeper Viraj Asanka. Kyaw came close to doubling the lead in first half stoppage time, but after meeting Yan's cross at the back post, blazed his half volley wide of the mark. He again came close to adding to the lead eight minutes after the break after striking the face of the Sri Lanka crossbar from the edge of the six yard area after seeing his own chipped cross from inside the area headed back across the face of goal by Myo. And with 21 minutes remaining Myanmar were finally rewarded for their second half dominance as Yan brought down Khin Maung Tun's cross on the edge of the area and rolled the ball past the advancing Asanka despite appeals for offside from Sri Lanka. Yan almost added a third just a minute later as he met a chipped cross from Pai on the penalty spot only for Asanka to claw the downward header out of the corner at full stretch. But with 11 minutes remaining an onrushing Pai met Tun's left wing cross on the edge of the six yard area to guide a cushioned volley past an exposed Asanka before Myo expertly curled home a free-kick from 30 yards six minutes later.

India V/S Kyrgyz in AFC Challenge cup 2010 on 17/2/2010 Top
Coach Sukhwinder Singh believes defending AFC Challenge Cup champions India are in perfect shape to defend their title when they start their campaign against Kyrgyzstan in a Group B clash at Sugathadash Stadium on Wednesday. India beat Tajikistan 4-1 to land the the AFC Challenge Cup in New Delhi two years ago and secure their place at next year's AFC Asian Cup in Qatar. Sunil Chhetri's hat-trick inspired India on that occasion, but with qualification for the continental show-piece already secured, Singh will deploy virtually the same young team which won the South Asian Football Federation (SAF) Cup at the end of last year. Following December's penalty shoot-out victory over Maldives, India have opted against a full pre-tournament training camp with Singh confident his side is ready to hit the ground running against a Kyrgyzstan side they beat en route to winning last August's Nehru Cup on home soil. "We practised for only 10 days and all of our boys play in the I-League and also some played in the South Asian Games. We have not played any friendly games because all our boys are ready for the competition. We are in a tough group but we expect that," he said. "This is part of our Asian Games preparations and it will be a big help towards achieving that goal. We have brought some boys who were part of senior team but did not get international exposure and it will be good for them to get their chance to be part of the senior team." Kyrgyzstan coach Anarbek Ormombekov has already set the his side the goal of at least equalling their 2006 semi-final appearance as they strive to join India in qualifying for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar despite being the lowest ranked team in the tournament. Ormombekov's side, who finished an encouraging third at the Nehru Cup after also drawing with Lebanon and beating Sri Lanka, enjoyed a successful training camp in Bahrain before heading to Colombo. "We have a strong team and we have just one mission and that is to get a ticket to the next step and qualify for the Asian Cup," he said. "India won the last tournament and we were in India for the Nehru Cup and we have experience of India. We hope we know their style and have ideas and we think we are ready."
