AFC Challenge Cup test for Indian young guns Top
India coach Sukhwinder Singh is hoping to test the strength of his Asian Games-bound squad in the upcoming AFC Challenge Cup in Colombo. With the Indians already qualifying for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup in Doha, thanks to their win in the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup which booked their berth in the continental showcase, the pressure is off the team. But the eight-team tournament will help fine-tune the squad, feels Singh. "The stakes are not very high for us as we have already qualified for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup by winning the 2008 edition of this tournament," the 61-year-old told the Indian media. "But we are not taking this tournament lightly because this will help us in preparing for the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, in November." "A good show in the AFC Challenge Cup will give us the momentum after the SAFF Cup victory in December last year," he said. "We are in a tough group including DPR Korea, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan but I think my boys are ready for the challenge." He said there are many players in this young squad who have the ability to represent the senior national side. "The AFC Challenge Cup will give better exposure to these promising youngsters who can be part of future senior sides."
