Chelsea FC to promote football in India Top
Sep 8 (PTI) English champion football club Chelsea FC today said it is in talks with about ten leading corporate houses in India in order to promote football in India so that the country can host the World Cup by 2030. "For the past six months, we have been in discussions with about top ten corporate houses in India to promote football here," Chelsea FC Head of Marketing Ben Wells told PTI. While declining to name the corporate houses, he said the idea behind the discussions is to formulate a structure for a project which could help India host a football World Cup by 2030. "We do not believe in short-term measures. We see India as a long-term opportunity and are committed to it. Hosting an event like the World Cup by 2030 would leave a legacy that future Indians can build on," Wells said. He said Chelsea is looking at partnering with private companies, government agencies and football associations so that the game can be promoted in such a manner that it can become a career option for children in future. "What we need at the moment is a partner from corporate India, who understands that this is going to be a long-term project and financial returns will be slow to come, but it has a lot of potential," Wells added. The club has also been in touch with the All-India Football Federation for its plans to promote football in India, he added. Stating that the IPL has shown there is no dearth of money in India for sporting events , he said football, being an inexpensive game, can have a similar bright future in India as well. Asked if Chelsea would also like to bring its merchandise and branded cafe bars to India, like rival Manchester United has done, he said: "That can come later, but not before we have worked on the long-term goal of developing the game in India." Chelsea FC had won the English Premier League last season, pipping hot rivals Manchester United.
