Custom Search  by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir) CHANDIGARH, SEPT 9 Mohun Bagan SAIL Football Academy of Kolkata clinched the title by beating Indian Football Association, also of Kolkata, 1-0 in the well-contested final of the 8th Administrator's Challenge Cup All-India Under-17 Football Tournament at the Sector 17 Football Stadium here today. The all-important goal was scored by T Borish Singh in his second attempt by converting a peanlty in the 75th minute. Both the teams were equally balanced and exhibited the brilliant piece of soccer techniques. Both the teams framed good moves at several occasions but their vigilant custodians denied many of the sure chances. In the 20th minute of play Gopal Kundu of Mohun Bagan initiated a move from their half and sent a long penetrative pass to the right winger Narayan Biswas, who after controlling the ball gave a short pass to Sanjoy Haldar in the penalty box but Sanjoy Haldar was not vigilant and missed the bass and a chance of score. Both the teams were locked at 0-0 at the breather on the resumption of play after the interval both the teams tried their level best to score but missed the chances they got. In the 57th minute of play IFA Kolkatta frame a good move from the mid field. Jitu Das gave a grounder pass to Mithun but his short went over the bar. In the 55th minute of play Debjit Mondal of Mohun Bagan got a chance to score the goal but his kick went wider from the top of the penalty area. It was again Mithun of IFA who after dribbling past the Mohun Bagan defender took a power full shot at Mohun Bagan goal which struck the cross bar. In the 65th minute of play Puppar Mazumdar took a header at Mohun Bagan goal which was brilliantly saved by the Mohun Bagan custodian Saikat Das. In the 75th minute of play Mohun Bagan lads initiated a move from the right flank their right out T.Borish Singh sent a superb lofted cross in the penalty area of IFA where alert Debjit Mondal of Mohun Bagan took the header which struck the hand of Sandip Patra of IFA in resultant a penalty kick was awarded to Mohun Bagan. T. Borish Singh of Mohun Bagan took the penalty kick which was brilliantly saved by IFA alert custodian Sandip Paul but their defenders failed to stop the kicker T.Borish Singh in scoring off the rebound ball. Sandip Dey, Ranjan Dass, Debjit Mondal and Anubarata Maity of Mohun Bagan were cautioned by the referee in the 5th, 28th , 79th and 86th minute of play respectively. Lob Mondal of IFA was also cautioned in the 5th minute of play for involving in rough play. Chandigarh Director Sports M.L. Sharma gave away the prizes to the winning and runner-up teams. The winners received a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 and a rolling trophy while runners-up were given Rs. 25,000. Earlier during the interval Pradip Mehra, Advisor to Administrator, U.T. Chandigarh fecilitated the Chandigarh Football team which won the Junior National Football Championship for B.C. Roy Trophy. Each member of the team was given Rs. 5,000 cash. India-Gambia friendly cancelled Top
The international football friendly match between India and Gambia scheduled to be held on September 19 has been cancelled, the AIFF said on Monday. "Gambia gave late confirmation and there are some venue problems. So the match against Gambia is cancelled," All India Football Federation (AIFF) general secretary Alberto Colaco said. Chief coach Bob Houghton had said last week that India will play against Gambia on September 19 at Ambedkar Stadium after their international match against Namibia on September 15. It is learnt that due to the October 3-14 Commonwealth Games, the Delhi government wants the Ambedkar Stadium to be kept as standbye after September 15 and the city police was also reluctant to spare their personnel. "No international friendly will be played in September (after 15th) and two matches will be held in Pune in October," Colaco said. India lost two international friendly matches against Thailand on September 4 and 8 in Bangkok and Delhi respectively. The matches were part of their preparation for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar. Barcelona, Chelsea and United may come next year Top
In an initiative to raise football profile in the country, All India Football Federation is planning to bring top European clubs, including Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United, for an eight-team tournament in July next year. Delhi and Kolkata are likely to host the matches — four games each — with the final to be played at the revamped Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in the Capital. Liverpool and FC Porto are also expected to be part of the tournament, with a club from the Middle East and the winner of the I-League completing the line-up. A final decision on the eight teams — except for I-League champions — will be taken in a meeting in November, a top AIFF official said. Modi Fabrics, a Mumbai-based company, with whom the AIFF had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), will coordinate the event. "Yash Kohli of Modi Fabrics will be coordinating the event," the official said. "The tournament is to be held in July and some European clubs are likely to be part of it. An MOU, in this regard, has already been signed with Modi group," he said. "Things like fixtures and logistics related to the tournament will be discussed in the November meeting," he added. European clubs, including Manchester United and Arsenal, have been investing in Indian market for some time now in some way or the other. The Red Devils inked a five-year deal with Airtel last year, through which its customers get exclusive content, such as video clips of premiership matches, UEFA Champions League highlights and wallpapers of popular United players. Premier League giants Chelsea had recently said that they are closely watching the Indian market to find like-minded corporate partners. "We want to enter the Indian market with grassroots level engagement. Chelsea FC does not want to come to India just to play a match as we are committed to development of football in this country," Ben Wells, Chelsea head of marketing, said while speaking at the International Football Arena round table. THE GAME IN THE COUNTRY HAS NOT MADE IMPROVEMENT– Hammam Top
Concerned at Indian football's little progress in the recent years, AFC chief Mohammed bin Hammam asked the AIFF to take tough decisions against clubs resisting professionalisation of the game in the country. Addressing the media after chairing the third meeting of the ad-hoc committee on Professionalising Indian Football, Hammam admitted that the profile of the game in the country has not made much improvement since his visit in 2007 along with FIFA chief Joseph Blatter. "Not much things are not happening (since my visit in 2007). It is almost the same. India has a population of 1.2 billion and it is a vibrant economy. Football is developing fast in Asia but India is lagging behind. You should not accept this at all," he said. "Infrastructure is the biggest hindrance to the development of football in India and frankly speaking I don't see much change in this aspect," he said. Hammam laid the blame on the state of affairs of the clubs and said the AIFF will have to take tough decisions if the profile of football has to improve in the country. "AIFF is not the only stakeholder in India. It is just one of the stakeholders. It is doing a lot. The clubs are resisting to the AFC professional criteria. It is natural the clubs are resisting as they are not suitable to them. But they have to meet the club licensing criteria if they want to be in the professional league. "Tough decisions will have to be taken by courageous people. The current administration in the AIFF doesn't lack such kind of people," said Hammam. Delving on the past history of the game in the country, Hammam said development of football in Asia cannot be complete without India. "Football in India has a long history. The first recorded match was held in India in 1854, 100 years before Asian Football Confederation was established in 1954 in Manila. You have the second and fourth oldest tournaments in the world (in Durand Cup and IFA Shield). But frankly speaking, India is lagged behind the rest of Asia. "We in the AFC feel that no matter how much football develops in Asia we cannot do it without integrating India in it. India play a leading role in the development of football in Asia. So we formed this Committee with myself as chairman," he said. Hammam said AFC has no objection to institutional clubs taking part in Asian Champions League if they form separate commercial entities. "We are not against institutional clubs registering for taking part in AFC Champions League if they form separate commercial entities," he said. All India Football Federation President Praful Patel said those clubs which do not fulfil the AFC Pro-League licensing criteria by December 31 will not be allowed to take part in the 2011 I-League. "A team of AFC will visit all the I-League clubs in the country next month. They will spend eight to 10 days and physically check whether the clubs fulfil AFC licensing criteria or not. After that a report will be submitted and the list of clubs which fulfilled the criteria will be issued in February 2011," he said. "I am hopeful that most of the clubs will fulfil the criteria. If there is a problem it will be only a few," he said. Patel said he was hopeful of finding a solution to the tricky issue of converting institutional clubs into commercial entities as required under AFC licensing criteria. "This issue was discussed by the ad-hoc committee. There are some difficulties but I am being told that the clubs are looking on ways how to find a solution to this," he said. Patel said FIFA's project 'Win in India with India', which was launched by Blatter and Hammam in 2007 was also reviewed today. "Mr Hammam also reviewed the 'Win in India with India' project and he is happy particularly on the progress of laying of eight artificial turfs in the country. "Work has already begun in Mumbai, Bangalore, Imphal and Gangtok. For the other four turfs, we have inspected two places in Goa, one in Pune and one in Kolkata. All these will have to be done in this financial year as the money for this project will have to spend till March 31, 2011," he added. Patel said AIFF was also looking to construct football stadiums in five places in the country. " Karnataka government has given Rs 5 crore for the development of Bangalore football stadium. Then we are thinking of developing a stadium in Mumbai (now owned by PIL) and Ravindra Sarovar in Kolkata as we are negotiating the governments to give them for long leases. "Then we are looking for having a stadium in Goa and Delhi. In Delhi, we have to take up the matter only after the Commonwealth Games. We want stadium which could be used wholly for football," he added. The AIFF chief ruled out any Indian Premier League style football tournament in the country in near future, saying there was no infrastructure for holding such an event. "Everything has to be seen in long-term perspective. Where is the infrastructure to hold such tournaments. If we fail in such hyped up tournaments that will cause more harm to the country," Patel said.
