Salgaocar are champions of India Top
by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir) LUDHIANA, MAY 30 The party in Ludhiana had begun long back. At the moment, it seems, there will be no end to the celebrations. Hail Salgaocar! The Goan giants are the new I-League Champions – the Champions of India as I-league's love-affair with Goa continues. The Green Brigade made short work of JCT 2-0 at the Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana to finish at the top of the I-League table on 56 points from 26 matches, beyond the reach of any other club. Karim Bencherifa, the Salgaocar coach was ecstatic when www.the-aiff.com caught up with him. "We are officially the Champions. I knew we had almost won it. But with this victory, the Championship is officially ours," he said. Salgaocar had earlier won the 3 rd National Football League in 1998-99. At the kick-off, there were doubts. JCT intended to upset Salgaocar's cart with a win to crawl out of relegation zone, a win which would have brought Dempo SC back in the Championship race. But Salgaocar midfielder Francis Fernandes put everything to rest scoring the first goal as early as the 13 th minute. From there on it was unrealistic to think Salgaocar could slip. And they didn't -- Yusif Yakubu piercing the final nail in the coffin in the 85 th minute. Bencherifa dedicated the success to excellent team work. "I need to salute my players; I need to salute the support staff; I need to salute the management for their support. The team-spirit has been excellent," he added. "There has so much healthy competition among the boys. Everyone had mutual respect for the other. And it benefitted the team." No one spared a thought for JCT who now stare at relegation (24 from 26 matches) – blame it on the cruelty of the game. It's all about the Champions. With this, it's four out of four for Goa in the I-League – Dempo (twice) and Churchill Brothers having won it earlier. You cannot just brand it as the changing face of Indian Football; you ought to admit, it's now the Face of Indian Football. Hail Salgaocar! They are the Champions of India.
