Odafe dashes East Bengal hopes | Top |
by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir) FATORDA, MAY 22 How much of a satisfaction does a footballer get in playing party spoiler? Ask Churchill Brothers striker Odafe Okolie and all you get in return is a wide grin and a flash of the victory sign. In a match which was a 'do or die' for East Bengal, Odafe found it best to conspire and score both goals for Churchill Brothers to guide them to a 2-1 victory against the Kolkata side in an I-League match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Sunday. Baljit Sahni reduced the margin for the Kolkata team in the 79 th minute. The result dashes East Bengal's title hopes as they now stand on 47 points from 24 matches while Churchill move to 50 points from 25 matches. A delighted Odafe declared scoring goals in crucial matches gives him the ultimate satisfaction. "My job is to score goals and I try to do it on a regular basis," he said. "The match never gets to me. Be it a final or a crucial match as this one, a striker always needs to stay focused. I'm happy I was able to contribute for my team's win." Odafe could have scored his first in the 29 th minute but saw his attempt blocked by an alert East Bengal custodian Jayanta Paul after Kayne Vincent had put him in the clear. Nevertheless, he scored in the next minute itself. This time, Binesh Jalan set it up for him and his left-footer found the net past a diving Jayanta as Churchill went into the interval with a one-goal advantage. Binesh also had a hand in Churchill's second goal as well. In the 58 th minute, he went past the East Bengal defence with a solo run and was eventually brought down inside the box by substitute Naoba Singh. Odafe gleefully converted from the spot. East Bengal had little option but to go all out. And it paid dividends in the 79 th minute when Baljit Sahni scored from close off a pass from substitute Ravinder Singh. The goal did raise hopes of an East Bengal comeback as the Red-and-Gold launched a series of attacks. But all of it came a bit too late. Mohun Bagan beat JCT: In another match, Mohun Bagan blanked JCT 2-0. Satish Kumar scored the first goal for Bagan in the 60 th minute while Ashim Biswas doubled the lead in the 69 th minute. Bagan, by virtue of this win move to 34 points from 25 matches while JCT languish in the relegation zone with 24 points from 25 matches. | |
