Licensed negotiator – The only 3 FIFA approved Player Agents from India | Top |
By Micky Aigner Posted On Monday, April 26, 2010 at 10:07:13 PM Pune: In a span of six months, city football seems to be going through the roof in terms of achievement. From having a team make it to the I-League to conducting a National U-23 camp, a city official appointed as manager of the Indian squad, to the establishment of a Football Development Centre, Pune now has heard it all. Monday saw another first when 30-year-old Jehan Kothary passed the FIFA Player's Agent Examination conducted by the All India Football Association (AIFF) for the first time. In doing so, Kothary is one of the three out of 10 aspirants from all over India to appear and clear this first of its kind exam that was held on April 15 in New Delhi. Kothary's success in this branch of the game, which usually flourishes in Europe and other continents on a large scale, is the perseverance of someone who has a diehard passion to be involved with a sport he so passionately followed. Of course, it all began with being a player himself, which includes being part of the PDFA League by turning up for Ex-Loyola Students Association (ELSA) and Deccan XI FC, respectively, for about four years. Thrilled by the result, Kothary now awaits his licence, after which he is entitled to add the title: Players' Agent licensed by the AIFF. This means that, in future, there is a possibility that Jehan may be dealing with a few big names, negotiating deals for them with Indian clubs and, with luck, 'other clubs' (read: European) as well. With AIFF 'officially' sending him a communiqué signed by honorary secretary Albert Colaco on Saturday, Kothary says, "The plan is to get into the football player management scene, with an aim to provide better opportunities to existing and upcoming footballers to play the game professionally." For the record, Kothary has been in sports marketing/ consulting for the past five years, and is also part of Sportnexus —a sports management company —and partner in Integrated Sports Management. Simply put, he is not in an out-of-the-box situation, just that in becoming an 'agent' he has a particular focus. "Football it will be hereafter. I always dreamed to be in some way associated closely with the sport," says Kothary, who says he is "super-inspired" by Pinhas "Pini" Zahavi, an Israel-born football agent who has been involved in some of the most expensive transfers in the footballing world. So, any player in mind to sign up? Says Kothary, "I have got a player from Goa who played for Sesa and is looking for an I-League break… so let's see. I haven't signed him, but may do it next week." Having set foot in unknown territory, Kothary certainly does not know what is in store for him for now. But then, if one thinks about how many will actually want to self-fund his own trip for an exam on a subject very nascent in India, one will either think he's crazy or knows what to do hereafter. | |
